We are the only bookshop in Aberdeen, the “Oasis in the Karoo“, and we like to think it is one with a difference – we also sell craft items, and provide a range of services to our customers, including a proper children’s facility and a comfortable reading room.
The bookshop stocks a full range of new and used books, English, Afrikaans, Childrens, Fiction and Non-Fiction. The stock is naturally constantly changing as we buy and sell. We do not stock many brand new books because of their high cost, and the additional burden of VAT, but can obtain virtually any title in or out of print within a short space of time on order. We carry some Africana, mainly to cater for tourists, and we also carry quite a large selection of old magazines. The ads from fifty or sixty years ago are quite amusing, especially the prices !
The craft side of the business stocks a wide range of craft items, mainly for scrapbooking and card-making. These are either sourced from SA manufacturers or imported direct from China (not from China via USA, as are supplied to many craft shops, at substantially higher prices).
We manufacture our own range of greetings cards, under the “Karoo Kards” brand.
Lessons are offered in school mathematics and maths literacy, and in computer familiarization. We also design, construct, host and maintain websites for small businesses locally and farther afield, and run a quarterly craft market and book sale at our shop.
For local customers, we supply computer printer ink (to order), we print photographs of any size, and we take and print ID photos.
Our other website, silversurferswebsite, is a general interest magazine aimed at the over 60′s, particularly those
with a literary bent. It currently attracts 10 -20 thousand visitors per month worldwide.
From time to time, we organize, produce and host glitzy poetry and music soirees, right here in Aberdeen. These are well attended by all sections of the local community.
Finally, our bi-monthly printed newsletter “ABC Bookworms” is distributed free here in Aberdeen, and is available elsewhere by subscription at R10 per copy plus p & p.
We shall also be making the electronic version available free on this website to subscribers only – please subscribe on this page ! Your email details are perfectly safe with us, and you will not be plagued with junk mail.
